prime Penn was a beast! would be a very interesting fight.man is a warrior
why not Penn-Hughes 1 or 3?
Lw gas fest
I think GSP did better in the first round than Khabib would, but Khabib's GnP is miles ahead of GSP, and we all saw what GSP did to Penn after the first round.
Penn/Hughes II? So he would beat his ass for two rounds and then get a freak rib injury and lose?
it's hard to gauge when prime BJ Penn was prime BJ Penn
he wrestled so many different fighters in so many weight classes that he was never consistent. in 3 years he went from taking GSP to a split decision to getting the shit kicked out of him
does this mean that prime Conor was when he beat Eddie Alvarez? or when he beat Jose Aldo? cuz that was fooking 3 years ago now
And Pulver would beat Conors ass too.
Little Eagle soars again.
Of course prime Penn beats McGregor.
Yeah cos Frankie is a can right. Also first fight was a robbery.
It’s easier to judge a fighter’s prime after his career is over.
To me, fighters usually have two primes. A physical prime and a technical prime. For some fighters, those two primes happen together and it’s amazing.
BJs physical prime was around the time against Gomi, Hughes and Ludwig. He was an animal, came out the gate and just manhandled them.
His technical prime was against Stevenson up to Edgar. He was clearly not as agile, flexible and explosive anymore but was more methodical.
He wasted his peak time being lazy and fighting way too high above his weight class.
Edit: As far as Conor goes, he absolutely was in his physical prime and that mauling from Khabib did a number on him. So physically, he may not be the same but I know for sure that Conor will get technically better.
Prime BJ Penn was a monster.
Good boxing, especially good jab.
Great takedown defense
World class grappling
Even when he fought Nick Diaz the jiujitsu canceled out on the ground and honestly as long as Penn's gas tank wasn't empty he was picking the bigger Diaz off very well with his jab.
The first round of that fight was almost like McGregor vs Diaz.
I agree he would give McGregor and Nurmagomedov a hell of a fight. Also he would be a formidable foe for Tony Ferguson.
Penn destroys Conor in his pomp
Prime Penn is meaningless
Even Prime Penn could have a rough night if unmotivated
Motivated Penn destroys Conor and licks his blood.
Matt Hughes has a chance at beating Conor because of the wrestling. Matt Hughes might be able to win a decision after the later rounds when Conor gases out.
Prime BJ was insanely skilled, crafty and instinctive fighter - remains unmatched to this day.
Prime Penn would figure out Conor within first round, pressure him with his assortment of attacks and get the finish by RNC or TKO in 2nd or 3rd.
He also had a granite chin. And most importantly regularly fought LARGER, not smaller men.
This is my opinion and nothing any remaining McHuggers can say can change my mind. Penn was a man of action... not words.
It would be a better fight than many think.
1. Penn did to Nick Diaz at 170 for 1 round (before gassing) what Conor did to Nate before gassing
2. This is the same Nick who went 5 rounds with Anderson Silva
A prime BJ Penn could hold his own in the striking, had an insane chin, and good takedowns/great grappling. So I might favour him slightly.
