Acclaimed THE RIDER Filmmaker Chloe Zhao to Direct Marvel Studios' ETERNALS Movie

Chloe Zhao has nabbed the gig to direct Marvel’s next potential franchise, the Jack Kirby-created title The Eternals. Matthew and Ryan Firpo, whose spec script Ruin topped the 2017 Black List, penned the script for the superhero team adventure.

The project features the super-powered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants that were created by cosmic beings known as Celestials.

Kirby created the title in 1976 during his cosmic hero stage and was influenced by such works as Chariots of the Gods, which explored ancient gods as aliens.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that one aspect to the story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.

The project also allows Marvel to assemble a diverse cast of various shapes and sizes.

The director search for Eternals narrowed in the last few weeks of summer, with a shortlist consisting of Watchmen pilot helmer Nicole Kassell, Travis Knight (Bumblebee, Kubo and the Two Strings), as well as Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra, the duo behind Colombian movie Birds of Passage.

Chinese-born Zhao was already well known to Marvel as she went down the road with the company on Black Widow, the standalone featuring Scarlett Johansson's spy heroine. That gig ultimately went to Cate Shortland.

Eternals is a big opportunity for WME-repped Zhao, who will be going from the settings of Native American reservations and American Heartland from her indie festival darlings The Rider and Songs My Brothers Taught Me to the epic global, if not intergalactic, scale of this Marvel project.

    Excellent post @DM1982

My guess, by the look of the aesthetic, is they'll go in the direction of the Annabelle films; again, which is bollocks, that's not the tone of Chucky movies and they'd just be blatantly copy-catting.

Matthew Vaughn Returning to Write and Direct KINGSMAN 3 for a Nov. 2019 Release

Fox's third Kingsman movie will hit theaters on Nov. 9, 2019 — the date previously reserved for Bond 25, which has been pushed to early 2020. Matthew Vaughn, the writer/director of the two previous films in the franchise — Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle — is returning to write and direct the threequel.

The studio has not yet disclosed casting or plot details, though in a recent interview with Empire magazine, Vaughn said the third film would mark "the conclusion of the Harry Hart-Eggsy relationship."

Also opening that weekend is Midway, the Roland Emmerich-helmed interpretation of World War II's Battle of Midway starring Luke Evans, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, Darren Criss and Woody Harrelson.

Based on the Kingsman comics penned by Mark Millar and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, the first film in the series, Kingsman: The Secret Service, introduced viewers to a spy organization operating out of a Savile Row menswear shop. One of these spies, Harry Hart (Colin Firth) took the young, small-time criminal Gary "Eggsy" Unwin (Taron Egerton) under his wing and made him a Kingsman-in-training.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle added Julianne Moore as the villainous head of the world's leading drug cartel, who is blackmailing the U.S. president into legalizing addictive drugs. Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal and Jeff Bridges also joined the cast.

The first film was a surprise box-office hit, making over $414 million internationally. The second film did nearly as well, raking in $410 million across the globe.

Mel Gibson to Direct and Co-Write THE WILD BUNCH Remake for Warner Bros.

The Wild Bunch will ride again. Warner Bros. has set Mel Gibson to co-write and direct a remake of the violent and influential Western, THR has confirmed. Bryan Bagby will co-write the script with Gibson, who will also executive produce the movie.

Sam Peckinpah, known for his action and macho-fueled movies, directed the 1969 original, which told of aging outlaws trying to live out the final days of the Wild West even as the 20th century has no use for them.

The Wild Bunch starred William Holden and Ernest Borgnine, among others, and was nominated for Oscars for original screenplay and score. But it was in its action set-pieces and imagery that the film made an impact, with the picture also dividing audiences and critics over its depiction of violence.

The Wild Bunch is considered the zenith in the filmography of Peckinpah, who also helmed such pics as Straw Dogs and The Getaway.

The material may be sympatico with Gibson, who won a best director Oscar for the 1995 epic Braveheart, which was also notable for its violent scenes. His follow-ups The Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto and the Oscar-nominated Hacksaw Ridge have also been singled out for their gritty and bloody depictions of man-versus-man conflicts throughout history.

The Wild Bunch movie would not be Gibson’s next project. That remains Destroyer, his World War II Navy movie that he hopes to get going in 2019.

DARK PHOENIX Pushed Back to June 2019, Untitled DEADPOOL Opening In December

20th Century Fox is making a few key changes to its release calendar, including pushing back Alita: Battle Angel and Dark Phoenix, while adding an untitled Deadpool movie to its slate this year.

The untitled Deadpool movie will open in wide release on Dec. 21 this year. Meanwhile, Robert Rodriguez's Alita will move from Dec. 21 to Feb. 14, 2019. Dark Phoenix, the next X-Men installment, moves from Feb. 14, 2019 to June 7, 2019. The studio has also moved its long-in-development (and directorless) X-Men spinoff Gambit from June 7, 2019 to March 13, 2020.

There is speculation that the untitled Deadpool film could be a kid-friendly re-release of the R-rated property, perhaps this year's Deadpool 2. Star Ryan Reynolds sparked those rumors with an image calling back to The Princess Bride featuring Fred Savage reprising his role from the 1987 film as a boy whose grandfather reads him a book while he's sick. Though given how labor-intensive and expensive creating an alternate cut of a movie is, perhaps the Deadpool release will just be Deadpool 2 with added footage of Deadpool reading to Savage. The untitled Deadpool opens on a crowded day for blockbusters and will go against Warner Bros.' Aquaman and Paramount's Bumblebee.

The release date changes come as the pending Disney/Fox merger is expected to close in 2019 and which will give Disney's Marvel Studios the rights to the X-Men. The merger calls into the question the likelihood of a Channing Tatum Gambit movie, which has had trouble getting off the ground, actually surviving the move to Disney. Fox also has X-Men spinoff New Mutants set for Aug. 2, 2019; that horror-tinged film also has been long delayed and has already been shot. It was originally supposed to open April 13, 2018.

The news of Dark Phoenix's shift comes just days after the first trailer for the film hit, touting its old February release date. Dark Phoenix already had been delayed in the past and underwent reshoots. It originally was supposed to open in November of this year.

Fuck, they pushed Alita back into February? That's not a good sign, Feb is a dump month.
